REVIEW: Celtic Frost - Parched With Thirst Am I And Dying Noise Records, 1992
6/10
Celtic Frost - Parched With Thirst Am I And Dying - cover art The epitaph of Celtic Frost was written through the release of this “Best of” that includes material from all the ages, rarities and some unreleased tracks. Behind that romantic title we can find some interesting goodies here and there. I ought to say this is a young person´s guide to the music of Celtic Frost, or describe “Parched...” as an introduction to the ones willing to know the magnificence of the band, but I can´t fall into that pit, sorry. This album doesn´t feature many tracks from the first times and it concentrates upon “Vanity/Nemesis” and “Cold lake”, though with a significant change: the “Cold lake” songs had been partially re-recorded or re-mixed, in a try to mend the past disaster. I think the album should have had more of a retrospective character, giving the deserved importance to songs as “Dethroned emperor”, “Suicidal winds” or “Fainted eyes”, that have been forgotten in this album. However, this album has its good points, like including the “In the chapel, in the moonlight” version that Dean Martin sang a long time ago, a track hard to find that was only released in an EP. We can also find an old track belonging to the primal years, “Journey into fear”, never before released in any form, very heavy, very fast and very sick! Probably the most remarkable new item in the album. There´s another couple of unreleased tracks that are correct (especially “The inevitable factor”). The rest are more or less interesting rehearsal versions, edited versions of the band´s famous tunes, some studio jams, etc. A must for Frost maniacs, but if you want to get into the dark art of this band, I recommend to buy their classic albums and leave this thing alone, in order to achieve a proper vision of what this band represents.
