REVIEW: Centrica - Centrica Musea, 2008
7/10
Centrica - Centrica - cover art Intelligent but rather standoffish instrumental prog-wank from Italy, this quartet of newcomers definitely provides a fine opening salvo and promise of things to come. It’s a concomitant love-in of all things Dream Theater, from the flagship band itself to solo Jordan Rudess and most certainly Liquid Tension Experiment. I also hear tangential flecks of Tangerine Dream and Asia, especially with relation to keyboard blanketing, alongside the usual scalar trills and runs. Despite being a gathering of upper-tier musical talent, Centrica isn’t overly fussy in its arrangements or uniformly showy in its virtuosity, which makes for plaudits from moi for virtuous anti-snobbery. With that said, this is music that’s easy to like but hard to love, especially when this veers out of prog-metal and into basic prog- or pomp-rock, as it often does. At that point, something wonderful needs to happen for these very long tracks to take flight and soar like John Ashcroft’s eagle. The most basic go-to mechanism would be, y’know, a singer and what-not. Fortunately, Centrica seem to think likewise, as the fellows are presently on the lookout for the same. Y’see, great minds (and dipshit metal literati) do think alike.
