REVIEW: Century - Melancholia E-Wave Records, 2001
6.5/10
Century - Melancholia - cover art Century started out as the side project of the Crematory drummer Markus Jüllich but has now grown up to be a "real" band. Even though this is more of a pop/hard rock band than a metal band the music is far from being upbeat which is clearly shown by the title. Soft, atmospheric metal has been mixed with catchy pop tunes from the eighties and a little bit of gothic darkness. The result is ten warm, melancholic songs that may very well be heard on the radio stations all over the world. Fans of HIM and newer Paradise Lost could find Century attractive but to tell you the truth this album is not very exciting although there are some very nice melodies here and there. It does induce a nice soothing feeling but a lot of metal fans will probably find it a bit hard to accept this album. As I´ve already mentioned it has got a few bright moments and the songs are well planned but there is not a lot of it that impresses me that much. Several metal bands have tried on a more gothic approach and some of them, like Katatonia, has succeeded very well but others seem to fade out to a melancholic nothingness and inbetween we have bands like Century. A little more emotion, stronger guitar melodies, less pop tunes and less weird keyboards and this could be a real interesting new act. Far from being a lousy album but not overwhelmingly impressive either.
