The thing that I admire Relapse Records most for is their
will to sign experimental bands in all genres of extreme music. The bands are
of course of varying quality but I like the spirit of this label. Some of
their bands are exceptionally boring while others like Pig Destroyer are
simply amazing. Cephalic Carnage will have to place themselves somewhere in
between but they are still an interesting band. Their musical roots can easily
be found in grindcore and this is probably not much of a surprise to those of
you who know the Relapse releases by heart but Cephalic Carnage is so much
more than simple grindcore slamming. Instead of just following the same path
as all Napalm Death imitators out there they have chosen to let influences
from other genres shine through their music such as death metal grooves, weird
jazzy rhythms and, sometimes very annoying, noise samples. Some of you might
object and tell me that there is nothing groundbreaking about this either but
this does not change the facts: Cephalic Carnage have created an enticing
musical potpourri where every fan of extreme music will hopefully find
something appealing. This is the third full-length album from these Americans
and they are living proof that there is still room for development in the
extreme music scene. Extremely chaotic and not really amazing but I still like
what they are trying to achieve. Track titles like "Black Metal Sabbath" and
"Cannabism" should tell you all you need to know about this band. If you
find this entertaining go check them
out.
