The name Cerberus has been used more times then it ever should have been by the metal community. It's even been used for a total of three times in the United States alone, if not even more times. However, this is the one Cerberus band that has made it with the name, and their music is much like the beast their name represents.
What Have We Become is an EP the band released between albums. While most EPs happen to cost just as much as full length albums, and many aren't even worth it, this one is. It's comprised of five original tracks, three of which never appeared outside of this release ("Falling Empire", "Obisidian", and "What Have We Become?"). However, these three are easily the stand out tracks, and the ending to "In Contempt" stands out in itself.
Cerberus has managed to perfectly blend melodic death and thrash on this release. While the music has a more melodic death feel to it, many of the riffs will easily resemble that of thrash. The production quality of the CD is just great, and the music is blistering, except for moments on the track "What Have We Become?", however the amazing solo mid-song easily makes up for the slacking moments.
What Have We Become? is a pretty good CD. It's nothing to really go crazy over, but it does show that Cerberus is one of those bands to watch out for as they mature as a group. The only problem the disc has is that sometimes, some of the songs will slow down and feel somewhat tedious, but luckily it doesn't last and is made up for by an amazing solo or excellent, faster guitar work. All in all, it's worth a listen, but you probably won't replay it much.
