REVIEW: Chaosbreed - Unleashed Carnage (demo) Self-financed, 2003
7.5/10
Chaosbreed - Unleashed Carnage (demo) - cover art Some bands struggle for years to find a sound of their own to characterize their music and personalities and eventually lead the way to a record deal. This is perhaps the goal for most bands of today but then there are those who wish to take us back in time and offer younger metal fans a history lesson and openly admit that they do not have the ambition to create something new and refreshing. The Finnish band Chaosbreed is one of the latter. The idea for the band came about in March 2002 at a Chuck Schuldiner tribute show at Nosturi, Helsinki. Today the band consists of well-known musicians who are current or former members of acts like Amorphis, The Black League, Sentenced, Gandalf and Moonsorrow. In other words these guys are no newcomers to the metal scene and the three songs offered on this free demo recording show that they know their metal history well. No need to struggle coming up with a new label to fit their sound since they owe it completely to the early Swedish death metal scene with major acts like Entombed, Unleashed and Grave. All three tracks are very much inspired by the Sunlight atmosphere (Sunlight Studios was where many of these bands recorded their album together with legendary producer Tomas Skogsberg) even though they were recorded in a Finnish studio. Even though there are similarities to be seen in all tracks there are also different sides of the band shown. The first one is the most brutal and least accessible of the three, the second one is built on groovy headbanger riffs while the final one is the most melodic one. If you are a big fan of the early Swedish death metal scene Chaosbreed will not disappoint you. They know what they're doing and they do it well without flaws or spectacular effects.
