REVIEW: Charisma - Hunting You Self-financed, 2004
6/10
Charisma - Hunting You - cover art Charisma is a young Finnish band that formed in the autumn of 2002 by former Ceremonial Embrace (a full-length album called "Oblivion" out on Displeased Records in 2001) members Heikki Kähkönen and Olli Kokkonen. Apparently they were getting tired of playing black / death metal like many musicians do after a while and wanted to focus their attention on what they have labelled as "action metal" themselves. Apparently action metal refers to crisp, mellow yet heavy rock melodies with both growling and clean male vocals. Unfortunately for the band the rough vocals only sound decent and the clean ones are not good enough to be placed on any disc if you have any sense of taste. There is a strong touch of Finnish melancholy present in the melodies while the more aggressive elements and the vocals remind more of modern nu-metal or American heavy rock.

They remind quite a lot of Sentenced at times although Charisma are not quite as depressive and gloomy. The use of cellos is quite an interesting idea which actually fits well into the music. These guys have been serious about this release and have spent a lot of money from their own pockets on a professional production which they should be praised for. Especially the vocal department needs some fixing in my opinion and coming up with slightly more memorable melodies and riffs next time is a suggestion I would not turn down either. Charisma have produced a decent second demo (they released their first "Beating The Attitude" in 2003) but they don't reach quite as far as they want.
