REVIEW: Charons Nymfer - Se Döden På Dig Väntar Ominous Recordings, 2006
6.5/10
Charons Nymfer - Se Döden På Dig Väntar - cover art The Swedish poet and song writer Carl Michael Bellman (1740-1795) is somewhat of a national treasure for our country in the north. Charons Nymfer is the name of one of his songs but also the name of a young Swedish band who have decided to interpret the darker aspects of his lyrics in their own unique way, taking 250 year old songs into the 21st century. Charons Nymfer consists of Tomas Nilsson (guitars) from the death metal act Suicidal Seduction and Dick Lundberg (bass, vocals; some Swedish may know him from the TV show "Baren" a few years back). For those of you who are not familiar with the Bellman tunes, as they are all in Swedish, they are very often sung while consuming some amounts of alcohol. Usually performed without any music at all, or possibly accompanied by an acoustic guitar, Charons Nymfer have modernized and darkified the songs by adding distorted vocals and some electric guitars. Their version of "Nu lunka vi sÃ¥ smÃ¥ningom", my favorite of the album, does definitely possess a metallic atmosphere. While they do succeed with their experiment in some songs, a few others are butchered mercilessly, and the final result turns out a little shattered. A brave attempt though and there are indeed several bright moments to enjoy no matter what your musical taste is like.
