Children Of Bodom are definitely one of the most successful metal bands Finland has produced within the last years. From album to album they improved more and more and now here it is: their 4th studio album entitled "Hate Crew Deathroll' which was one of the most anticipated albums in 2003. As always you can see the bands' trademark (the reaper and his scythe) on the cover. A brillant album, but I have to say that it's not able to reach the previous one 'Follow The Reaper' which is still my favorite COB-album. However, these guys know how to make good albums and their work is as complex and impressive as always. The album starts right away with an outstanding opener called "Needled 24/7" - one of the strongest songs of this album including awesome melodic guitar solos as we're
used to get from Alexi Laiho. Even though the title "Bodom Beach Terror" sounds a bit weird, this song shows again Alexi's extremely difficult neo-classical way to play guitar which makes him such an unique player. This song convinces the listener right from the start and is absolutely worth listening. The next song "Angels Don't Kill" reminds me a bit of "Every Time I Die" (on Follow The Reaper), one song I really like very much. It's slower than most of the others and shows a pretty good example that not only guitars are
an essential part of this band but also Janne's fantastic keyboard melodies. You simply have to like this song.
Quite a typicial Bodom song seems to be "Triple Corpse Hammerblow" (where do they get their songtitles from?!). Very melodic keyboard work, fast drumming and bass playing and of course one of Alexi's impressive guitar solos. "You're Better Off Dead" wasn't picked as the single for nothing. Again you can find the typical melodic and yet brutal elements and this time there are also odd background vocals which make the song interesting in a strange way. The best song can be found in the title song "Hate Crew Deathroll" at the end of this CD. This song definitely contributes much to the rating of this album. Real fast melodic guitar solos, fast drumming and great vocals here even though you can't really understand what Alexi is singing, as always ;). Especially the chorus will stay in mind for a long, long time ("We're the Hate Crew, we stand and we won't fall..."). Now you may ask why this album only gets a 9.5/10 rating? Well, this album is definitely amazing, but in my opinion "Follow The Reaper" had more great songs (like Hate Me!, Everytime I Die or Follow The Reaper) and was a little bit better regarding the album as a whole. Children Of Bodom have nevertheless improved their technical work, but they might even have gone a bit back to the roots. One thing I missed on this album were the great guitar/keyboard-duels as we could hear them on the previous album. If you are a fan of this band and / or genre you might already have this album - if not, what are you waiting for then?
