REVIEW: Children Of Bodom - Hatebreeder Spinefarm Records, 1999
9.5/10
Children Of Bodom - Hatebreeder - cover art Children Of Bodom has obviously managed to perform the difficult task of improving on their debut album. The songwriting is slightly more mature, the songs are heavier and more bombastic. In short you could say that they have made their sound even more distinct and removed the flaws from the first album. Beautiful melodies are also an important ingredient in the Bodom stew and this album has lots of them. Again I can´t help but notice how similar the Children Of Bodom sound is to that of Nightwish. I don´t know if they are from the same part of Finland but this can´t be a coincidence, can it? Something nice to see is that the band shows no sign of losing heaviness or speed as so many other bands have done before. Children Of Bodom are set to conquer the throne of death metal and with this release I think they have accomplished their mission. A faster, more melodic and dynamic metal band will be really hard to find. In my opinion Children Of Bodom is among the best that has happened to the metal world in the 90s and if this album is still missing in your record collection don´t wait another second. Unique, groundbreaking bands like this one don´t come by very often. I am really, really, really looking forward to see what they can do when the new millennium is finally here.
