A fine little beginning here from an obscure little upstate New York entity that could stand for a name change, if only because it’s a bit disconcerting to encounter any band of forty-year-olds that calls itself “children.” My obvious asides aside, what we have here is a band that pays great homage to Queensr˙che and Vicious Rumors in nearly every way, from the classy upper-register vocal reaches, to gently progressive, slightly alt guitar tunings, to a more than occasional tendency to wander into dullness. Peter Andrews’ vocals are definitely on a par with those of Geoff Tate and James Labrie in terms of sound and quality -- where has this guy been hiding all these years? The group’s best songs (“The End,” “Mind’s Eye,” “A Day Away”) are trotted out first and the album does, admittedly, peter out towards the end, but I think that this band will see fit to work out some of these kinks when writing and recording at a less deliberate pace. Some of these songs have been tinkered with for years now; no such luck the next time! The self-titled album was produced by sound board luminary Dave Hodson, who lends this a compressed but atmospheric vibe somewhere between his work with Dream Theater and The Tea Party.
