REVIEW: Chris Caffery - W.A.R.P.E.D. Black Lotus Records, 2005
7.5/10
Chris Caffery - W.A.R.P.E.D. - cover art Guitarist Chris Caffery remains the most productive of the people in the Savatage camp. Last year's solo debut was a very ambitious album that established his status as a solo artist and he has won over many Savatage fans worldwide as well as gained new ones. "W.A.R.P.E.D." will further solidify his position, following the same musical path of muscular hard rock / heavy metal with a progressive twist. Clearly shaped by his time with Savatage, he has adopted a singing style that is quite diverse and not very far from what Jon Oliva used to do back in the good old days but with a somewhat rougher edge to it. The apprentice still has a few things to learn from his master but a song such as the wonderful "God Damn War" shows that he is definitely skilled enough to soar on his own wings. Not only is Mr. Caffery equipped with a powerful throat but he is also an accomplished enough song writer to record and release two hour plus albums in only two years. As one might accurately guess the sophomore effort does unfortunately contain slightly more filler material than the debut but there is so much else going on outside that it doesn't bother me much. This is the obvious pick for Savatage fans awaiting another album because both "W.A.R.P.E.D." and "Faces" are clearly more exciting than Jon Oliva's Pain. Solid song welding, aggressive guitar work and tasteful albeit somewhat indifferent solos.
