REVIEW: Coal Chamber - Dark Days Roadrunner Records, 2002
8/10
Coal Chamber - Dark Days - cover art Here's a band that, in spite of its short existence, managed to impress many and also to create a name well worth remembering. They had only released two albums before they were never to be heard from again, but all released tracks are known to fans of the genre. Metalcore had offered a zillion bands in the past few years, but Coal Chamber creations still manage to stick out somehow. Lyrics are pretty naive, but the music is well written and just amazingly produced. Originality, power, crunchy guitars and lots of weird sounds that keep you listening. Guitars are actually the most interesting thing about the entire band. So many weird effects combined so well and uniquely that it practically openes up new ways of developing modern metal. I also really like the cover and the booklet that comes with the CD (same kind of packaging on the other album as well - different design though). Just a little extra to come with the good music. Extra points on vocals and extra points on power as well. Not much more that could've been done to this record to make it better than it already is. It's new and it's the perfect music as far as the genre is concerned. Hardcore doesn't come very much better. It's those pesky lyrics that won't leave me alone...
