REVIEW: Cold As Life - Declination Of Independence CTYC Productions, 2000
6.5/10
Cold As Life - Declination Of Independence - cover art Cold As Life was born in Detroit, USA, in 1988 but then they were more of a punk band. Cold As Life of today are luckily heavier and more interesting with a stronger metal edge. They have fought hard to get where they are today and have been tried like few others when their vocalist Rawn was shot dead in 1993. That´s life in the big and beautiful car-producing Detroit... Musically Cold As Life can be compared with bands like Pantera and Machine Head because they have that undefinable but characteristic American sound. Perhaps they are a little harsher than these two and the vocals are more hardcore-ish. There are a few things that stops them from being among the best in the genre. The first is that the vocals are a little weak and not powerful enough at times. Secondly the never-ending pounding becomes a little monotonous in some songs and eventually tiresome. However the album is very well-produced and a couple of tracks like "I Can´t Breath" and "My Prayer" shows the true capacity of this talented but yet rather unknown band. Not a real masterpiece yet but the aggressiveness and anger on this album is a lot more interesting than most other unsigned bands today. Cold As Life is a band to look out for and the fact that they have toured Europe and played at the Dynamo Open Air anno 1999 should tell you a little about the quality of their music.
