Steady paces, hypnotic movements, Comatose Vigil brand of doom pretends to suggest a groovy atmosphere, a solemn march through darkness in the vein of the classic slow doom bands. Several listenings after, the veredict isn´t certainly outstanding for this Russian act, since their purposements don´t succeed when trying to create something unique. The synths and guitars drive the sound without complexities, the arrangements are simple but effective. The guitars are not the fuzzy, doooown-tuned, abyssic kind. The keys are quite monotonous and the chord progression is rapidly swallowed by the listener and it´s easy to get bored after some minutes. The band fail if they try to make reflective music or achieve a certain emotional crescendo through variation. That´s a too high expectation, taking into account the narrow range of nuances the band work with.
I miss some risk, some variation, some courage trying to do something outside well-trodden patterns. “Narcosis” is ok; the performance is correct, the sound is clean and there are no major flaws in the technical side. However, it lacks emotion and variation somehow. The repetitive schemes are the major wound. Moreover, to release the same song twice is a big mistake. Of course this is a single, an EP or whatever you call it, but this style doesn´t make the difference when the only variation is lyrics language...
As for the bonus track, it seems like a song to fill the release. The keys may sound even a bit gothic. The pace is faster than in “Narcosis” albeit, strangely enough, one could think it´s more enjoyable than the title track, comparing both cuts.
We´re before a release to make known the name of Comatose Vigil that after all is apparently a band with certain potential, as soon as they make some steps further into the pit and let their souls be driven by inspiration in their next work.
