REVIEW: Comma - Elusive Dreams Hammer Muzik, 2001
7.5/10
Comma - Elusive Dreams - cover art Real interesting and fresh new bands rarely come by these days but here we finally have one named Comma. They hail out of the doorway to Asia - Turkey - and their music is also somewhat influenced by the traditional Turkish music which is one of the reasons why their sound is so different from most other bands. Another reason is the powerful, although a little whining, vocals from Ufuk Özkurt which are well worth mentioning. When talking genre Comma would be put in the progressive metal category but since they once started out in 1998 as a pure heavy metal band they have a less complex and more straight-forward approach. Rock Hard editor Götz Kühnemund proclaimed Comma to be a band with the potential to strike the world and he was definitely right in his judgment. Even though this is the debut album from the band this is some very impressive stuff that may well surprise metal fans all over the world. This isn´t the kind of music you would expect from a country like Turkey but Comma is definitely a growing promise that should be appreciated by fans of metal in general since it is not as progressive as many other European and American acts. The songs are mostly about 5-7 minutes long which is just about perfect for this kind of music. I am not that familiar with the metal scene in Turkey and the only other band I can recall at the moment is Leviathan. What I can say is that the production of this album is extremely well done even compared to major label releases. This is perhaps not that surprising since it was done at the biggest studio in Turkey - Civciv - and done by the most promising producer in the country namely Ayhan Sayiner. It´s great to see metal spreading all over the world and the quality is getting better all the time. If you like good music then this is an album worth purchasing right away. These five very talented musicians have done everything in their might not to disappoint you and in my opinion they have without a doubt succeeded.
