REVIEW: Corpus Christii - The Torment Continues Undercover Records, 2005
7.5/10
Corpus Christii - The Torment Continues - cover art Portugal hasn´t been known as homeland of significant black metal acts, the same as happens with the rest of Southern European countries. Only Greece is decent in that aspect, only decent, too many Rotting Christ copycats have arisen there all these years. Ok, stop; I mustn´t digress. Corpus Christii seem to have been several years hanging around in the scene since this one is their fifth full length album, technically speaking that´s evident: the performance is skilled and the songs are well built on competent, inspired ideas. This band exhibits a plain Nordic approach in their brand of black metal. The sound is rough and aggressive, the speed is high and the mid tempos are convincing. The instruments are wisely used, drum fills and tempo breaks are well crafted, melodies are cold and grim, so what else do you need to taste good black metal? This band has all the elements needed to savour the style, so they won´t disappoint you at all if you are lloking for real black metal the Scandinavian way. I´ve remembered some Svartsyn while listening “The Torment Continues”. Certainly we´re not before an elite band nor the most original thing on Earth –I know that´s something I usually say on my reviews, so forgive me for manifesting those obsessions related with originality so often-. Anyway, they deliver the goods in a professional way and are far better than the majority of bands hanging around these days. A good black metal album, really.
