REVIEW: Corrupted - Born Of Greed Self-financed, 2004
9.5/10
Corrupted - Born Of Greed - cover art Ahhh…old school thrash. There’s nothing like it, when done right. The speed, the technical, repetitive and heavy riffs can get even the biggest stiff in the world headbanging in no time. But, as we know, true thrash has been a dying breed since the early 90’s, with band after band abandoning it like it was a sinking ship. Even the most championed of thrash bands, “The Big Four”, if you will, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer abandoned the genre. Now, all we have these days are European bands claiming to be thrash, but really aren’t, right? WRONG!

Enter Sweden’s Corrupted and their demo album, “Born Of Greed”, a band very much derived of the old school and proud of it. Right from the start, you can tell these guys graduated from the German school of thrash. This simple, short, but oh so sweet little demo is steeped in so much Kreator and Sodom influences, it’ll put a smile on the face of even the most jaded thrash metal fan. Vocalist Joseph even has a vocal style incredibly similar to Kreator’s Mille Petrozza, circa Endless Pain or Pleasure To Kill! Musically, the band is surprisingly tight for just a demo. It makes you wonder what they’ll be capable of when they record a full length album at a major studio. Even the sound is decent for a demo. It’s not the best, and still has somewhat of a tinny sound to it, but overall, for a demo, it’s not too bad. It doesn’t interfere with the power of the music too much.

Of the three songs here, three of them rule. There is absolutely no weak spot on this album, it’s just pure, full steam ahead, vicious, heavy-as-a-bag-full-of-anchors thrash metal of the most brutal order. Strong riffs and all. I mean, what’s a good thrash album without the RIFFS? They’re absolutely mandatory, and this demo has them in spades.

I’m expecting big things from these Swedish thrashers. They wave the banner of TRUE old school thrash, and take pride in it. The Haunted, they’re not. If you long for the days thrash was alive and well and had a spine, you cannot go wrong with Corrupted. Keep an eye on these guys, I know I will.
