REVIEW: Corvus Corax - The Atavistic Triad Dark Symphonies, 2000
6/10
Corvus Corax - The Atavistic Triad - cover art This is the debut album from Corvus Corax, a symphonic pagan black metal trio from the US. The first track starts off with an inauspicious ravens solo that might not come as a surprise since Corvus Corax is the latin/scientific name for the raven. Then we get into the dark mysterious land of the black birds. What you will hear is not raw black metal like Dark Funeral but more epic and progressive, following modern directions of Ulver, Arcturus and other bands but still maintaining a distinct style of their own. Unfortunately that sound is rather boring at times when minutes pass and you´re left wondering if something has happened. The music is far too non-melodic and repetitive to make for a real interesting album. When composing songs lasting for more than ten minutes you need to have material that can feed the full ten minutes and not just part of it. The album does have some highlights though when the band shows what black metal can sound like when done right but the symphonic overtones are primitive and often fail in their attempt to enhance the epic feeling that a journey into the long since forgotten depths of the raven mentality is in need of. Not a bad album but the have to improve on the songwriting for their second one to come.
