REVIEW: Coven XIII - Book Of Shadows Akashic Records, 1998
7/10
Coven XIII - Book Of Shadows - cover art If you are one of those people who only listen to metal and nothing else you can stop reading now. If you happen to have an open healthy mind just continue. Coven XIII is a band from Massachusetts, USA, with a unique style of playing. The fact that they can not be placed easily in a genre has been an obstacle in their musical career so far. According to the band themselves record company people have told them that they liked what they heard but then asked what kind of music they´re playing. Inspired by love and passion, the new modern Wiccan way of life and Shakespearean tragedies Coven XIII creates one of the emotional albums of gothic ballads seen in a long time. Beautiful male vocals from Teisen Russel and classical piano melodies from the magical fingers of Amanda Adams is the main ingrediences in this love potion. The first book of shadows from Coven XIII appropriately consists of 13 chapters and although most of the songs are slow love ballads with a medieval or Shakespearean atmosphere there are also some more experimental songs like "Red". Teisen's vocals are really beautiful but I would wish for more activities from Amanda and perhaps a little stronger and more powerful piano melodies because the piano is one of the most beautiful instruments there is. A good album it is but it feels as if there is something missing.
