REVIEW: Coven XIII - Live cd Self-financed, 2000
6.5/10
Coven XIII - Live cd - cover art The American band Coven XIII has undergone big changes since their debut cd "Book Of Shadows" from 1998. Although this is a live recording I doubt that their new studio sound can be that different from this. Not just slow love ballads anymore. Now we can hear heavier, almost hard rock, rhythms, faster jazz-rock inspired piano melodies and a harsher edge to the vocals. There are still slower romantic love ballads here but not as much as before. As I understand Teisen Russell, whose beautiful vocals garnered the debut album, is no longer part of the band and his replacement Kenneth Michael doesn´t quite have the same capacity. Even though some might like his raspy vocals I find them a bit annoying. As long as he keeps the vocals calm his voice is great but as soon as he wants to sing it out loud his raspy vocals appear again. Most of the songs are great though with nice melodies, both vocals and music, but as before I wish for stronger and more powerful piano melodies. Well, you can´t have everything you wish for in life, can you?
