REVIEW: Covered Call - Money Never Sleeps Blistering Records, 2009
7/10
Covered Call - Money Never Sleeps - cover art Named for the archaic stock trader term, dressed in suits, traders by day rockers by night, Covered Call attempt 80's styled Rock/Hair Metal similar to Bon Jovi, Van Hagar, maybe even Journey. That's kind of good and bad all at once, isn't it? Yet there's something endearing, maybe nostalgic, given the 80's were an era of great Metal and financial whirlwinds, sort of like the roaring 20's before the great stock market crash, similar to today.

Former Candlemass and current Therion vocalist Thomas Vikström continues to try different things, one would never recognize him here from his former bands, with soaring vocals close to TNT's Tony Harnell in excellence and range. Overflowing with anthems, 80's gang vocals, songs about girls, money, and parties, Money Never Sleeps is less a trailblazer than an art project. Just as plenty of people still play old styled Jazz for the sake of art, Covered Call abandon all hopes of a platinum seller, resulting in a sweet little record whose only intention is to rock out with it's cock out.

Complete with the mandatory Stryper-esque power ballad, this album fulfills all the desires of an old school Bon Jovi record, full of clichéd lyrics and riffs, yet it's all done well enough, simple but concise. Great vocals, elemental songs. At times the songs seem to run into one another, but that's how it is with a lot of happy Hair Metal.
