No other black metal band
has so far surpassed the success of the British libertines Cradle Of Filth.
Some of this is probably due to Dani's desperate publicity hunt but there is
of course a lot more to it. Their previous album "Dusk And Her Embrace" was
by many regarded as a soft caress but Cruelty is more straight-forward with
many haunting guitar riffs. The story of this concept album is based around
the life of the countess Bathory who used to drain young girls of blood in
blind belief that it would sustain her youth forever. This morbid fascination
of the countess is shared by many and as you know there is a legendary Swedish
black metal band going by that very name. Here we get to follow her life from
beginning to end. The album starts with a nice eerie intro as usual and we
even get to hear some brief Gregorian chants. The song compositions are more
coherent and mature than all previous creations born from the Cradle but I
still miss the amazing creativity shown on their Vempire EP. Nevertheless I
have come to love all their works except for the unfortunate mistake called
"From The Cradle To Enslave". If you thought that Dusk contained a too high
concentration of gothic influences and symphonic keyboards you will probably
like this one better. Loyal fans of the band will probably not care about one
word from me... I can't help it but yet again I have to mention my admiration
for the literary skills of Dani. He is without a doubt one of the most
intelligent men in the world of
metal.
