REVIEW: Cradle Of Filth - Damnation And A Day Sony Music, 2003
8/10
Cradle Of Filth - Damnation And A Day - cover art Cradle Of Filth has been given a lot of attention in mainstream media lately due to them signing a major label deal with Sony Music who decided to give them a chance to conquer the world for real. With a more generous studio budget than before they have been able to include real orchestration by The Budapest Film Orchestra and vocal performances by the Budapest Film Choir. It was obvious to me already with "Bitter Suites To Succubi" that the band adapted their sound to an even more commercial future on Sony Music. I'm not certain if this was intentional or not but their music became more straight-forward with a more sterile and less atmospheric sound. The lyrics also lost some of the Shakespeare touch and became simpler so that everyone would be able to read them without bigger problems. It is still impossible to mistake this for being an album from any other band but Cradle has definitely lost some of the magic that made them so special. Not really a bad album but I am still disappointed with Dani and his colleagues although I suspected that this would happen when they joined the Sony team. "Damnation And A Day" is the most professional sounding and the heaviest album the band has produced so far but it is also the most standardized and least interesting one. The only thing that impressed me the way they used to was the pompous classical intro. Cradle has always been one of my favorite bands and they still are but I sincerely hope that they will manage to rise to the top again. It doesn't help that Adrian Erlandsson is in the band now either (remember I'm Swedish)... An era might have ended.
