"Crowpath sharpens their knives and continue their blazing path of aural destruction with their sophomore album, Son of Sulphur." Yes, 'tis true. Sweden's sickest sons are back with a vengeance, this time shredding Grind, Death Metal, and Sludge into one big, scab coated stabwound. Complex as theoretical math (whatever the Hell that is), Son of Sulphur is also grating and dissonant in such a delightful way. If you were fortunate enough to get your grubby paws on a copy of Abandon's "In Reality We Suffer" you know the type of dissonance and abrasive soundscapes at play. As it turns out, one Johan Karlsson from Abandon (!) lends some vocal expertise to Crowpath on "Seed of Arson" and "Picked Clean." The slow pace of "The Lycanthrope" sounds like Abandon (fellow Swedes) were clearly an influence. Regardless, the best song in the bunch would have to be the semi-Entombed sounding "Children of Boredom" with killer organ playing courtesy of Maxus Wider -- and no, it's not a stab at Children of Bodom. Crowpath definitely excels at their brand of Grind but when they allow the tempo to wallow in the bloody mire, they absolutely rule. If nothing else, the slow parts add excellent punctuation to an already killer statement. Watch the fuck out for album closer "End in Water" which is chock full of furious twists and turns -- and an audio recording of something being set aflame in gasoline ~halfway through. Appropriately enough the album ends with the sound of someone (the Son of Sulphur?) wading through water. [Note: reading the lyrics, much of this seems like a concept album; the artwork lends itself to such, too.]
