REVIEW: Cruachan - The Middle Kingdom Hammerheart Records, 2000
9/10
Cruachan - The Middle Kingdom - cover art Cruachan is certainly not one of the most productive metal bands on this Earth but they are still one of the most interesting ones. On how many albums do you get the chance to listen to instruments like bag pipes, irish flutes, tinwhistles, bodhrans and uilleann pipes? This Irish band have managed to mix celtic folk music with metal and they do it just as good as Skyclad, if not better. Their debut album suffered from a bad production but that is not the case this time. The guitars are clear and the female vocals from Karen Gilligan are stronger than ever before. Except for a pretty boring intro this album contains nothing but great music although I like the first half of the album best. While the first album was a mix of folk music and black metal, "The Middle Kingdom" only occasionally sounds a little black. Most of the music is classic heavy metal spiced up with folk music and the strong female vocals is one of many reasons why Cruachan sound so good. If you haven't heard this band before you have missed out on one of the best folk metal acts in the world.
