As more and more girls enter the rock / metal scene the number of all-female bands also grow, slowly but steadily. Everyone knows about Vixen and Kittie but there are also a few more or less wider known Swedish bands like Drain (STH), Misdemeanor and the latest one on the rise - Crucified Barbara. This single is being released for Christmas sale and climbed high on the national singles chart, preparing people for the full-length album "In Distortion We Trust" which was released in January this year. TV exposure and mainstream media attention have helped these girls get their name known to a wide audience. What is it that everyone is so excited about then? Well, first of all, four young girls playing rock 'n roll does of course have a certain visual value which the record company is perfectly aware of. Hopefully they also realized that there is substance beyond the pretty faces.
The substance lies in the song writing of this quartet. Having worked together since they met at a rock party outside Stockholm in 1998, they write party rock in the vein of Backyard Babies, The Hellacopters and Motörhead. The punk influences are strong and the band have even recorded a cover of Motörhead's "Killed By Death" for this single which is decent but guitarist / vocalist Mia Coldheart tries too hard to sound like Lemmy and although she has a strong, deep, raspy voice it just falls flat in the end as they don't aim at doing something of their own. That ruins the idea of having a cover song on a three song single. In fact, there is only two songs on the single. The other one, "Losing The Game", has been recorded in two different renderings, the version which will be found on the album and an edited version which is in fact more original and energetic than the original version.
"Losing The Game" is a very strong single and has some heavy headbanging riffs inbetween aggressive rock vocals alongside one or two staggering but decent guitar solos. A good start for the band but nothing that hasn't been done before and better. The words to the Crucified Barbara songs are childish and pre-adolescent rock lyrics but what can you expect from four girls who go by the aliases Mia Coldheart, Klara Force, Ida Evileye and Nicki Wicked?
