REVIEW: Crystal Ball - Virtual Empire Nuclear Blast, 2002
7.5/10
Crystal Ball - Virtual Empire - cover art Hard rock from Nuclear Blast? I almost thought it was a joke at first when I listened to this album but it seems like Nuclear Blast have decided that it's time to broaden their vision and sign other acts than just extreme metal. Earlier on they signed Lacrimosa and that is pretty far from the death metal we are used to hear. This is luckily a good thing because as you all know there is a lot more good music than just extreme metal. Crystal Ball is a Swiss band that was formed in 1995 and started out as most bands do by playing covers of old heroes. Since then the band has had a rocketing career with a couple of album releases and opening up live for major rock bands like Bonfire, Pink Cream 69 and Krokus. Nuclear Blast themselves seem to be a little disillusioned with the new sounds on the label since they have decided to label them as melodic power metal. Crystal Ball is hard hitting heavy rock and nothing else. Of course they do share some influences with the metal world but to call them a metal band wouldn't be quite right. This is the third album from the band and I think they have come a long way since they began their career. I must admit that I haven't heard their previous work so I am only making guesses right now. As you may already know I am not a big fan of rock music in general but when it is done as well as Crystal Ball does it I can't help but rock along to wonderful tracks like "Savage Mind", "Night And Day" and "When The Night Is Over" (the chorus to that line is nothing but shiver inducing). Unfortunately one or two other tracks tend to get rather boring and monotonous with too high-pitched vocals but overall this is still a very good album. The world of hard rock is alive once again and I am glad that Nuclear Blast have opened their eyes to a wider spectrum of music.
