The Swedish band Cult Of Luna rose from the ashes of a hardcore band called Eclipse in 1998. The band has kept much of their hardcore roots, especially when it comes to the vocals, but they are now exploring a much wider range of musical influences. "Salvation" is an album where the rich textures will surround the listener from start to end and it is difficult not to be gripped by the atmosphere. A chilling, melancholic and surprisingly beautiful intro opens up before the real thing kicks in. Monstrous guitar walls are followed by psychedelic ambient passages and the slow-paced brooding songs make you think in the direction of Neurosis or Isis. "Salvation" is a true epic, it is a moody journey through dreamy landscapes and pounding rhythms. Cult Of Luna have found a niche of their own and they definitely don't follow in the footsteps of anyone else but themselves, indeed they might very well influence many young bands who will break through in the future. Fans of doom metal, hardcore and metalcore with a moderately open mind will certainly appreciate this album. As they drift back and forth between restrained aggression and melancholic ambience they do however tend to become rather predictable. They do it very well but it also holds them back slightly. "Salvation" is nonetheless an incredibly complete album without any boring moments or filler tracks despite being more than 70 minutes long, musically remote from pure hardcore without abandoning the musical landscape where they once came from.
