REVIEW: Cydonia - Cydonia Metal Blade Records, 2001
7/10
Cydonia - Cydonia - cover art Cydonia is a new power metal band from Italy but they do not really sound new since their music is very similar to the other bands from their homeland - Labyrinth, Vision Divine, Athena... - with traditional power metal backed up with keyboards. Sometimes it sounds great but it also gets boring rather quickly even though Dan Keying has a very good power metal voice. Perhaps one should not be surprised when the music reminds of Labyrinth since both Olaf Thorsen and Matt Stanciou is in Cydonia as well. Lyrically this is a very amusing album with a concept story around a civilization on Mars that has to leave the planet because of wars and environmental issues, thus settling on the Earth instead. The debut album from Cydonia do how a few bright spots but they are mostly the intros of the songs and after that it sounds like any other Italian or European power metal band. Perhaps Dan Keying has the voice of Michael Kiske but that doesn“t do much to impress me. It is nice to have a good voice but that is not everything.
