What a difference a couple of years makes. The
Hinderers, full of keyboards and industrial sounds, was a misguided and disjointed effort that never seemed to develop. Songs were slow, guitars boring, and the singer left a lot to be desired. At the time, hype was high for Dååth, founded by former Berklee students, it seemed that extreme Metal finally might have its virtuosos. And then the album flopped.
First they got rid of the keyboards and singer, bringing a fellow named Sean Z. to the vocal spot and relieving a co-founder of his keyboard duties. The result is a twin guitar assault that we haven't seen since Eric Peterson and James Murphy joined forces for Testament's The Gathering. The soloing and riffing are unbelievable, just insane. We may have to harken back to even Marty Friedman-era Megadeth or even Adrian Smith/Dave Murray (Iron Maiden) to find two guys that work together so well.
This time around, instead of pulling a Dream Theater, Dååth focused on the songs rather than their proficiency and consequently we now can hear the genius they were so eager to show off before. There's some room for improvement, but layered below Sean Z.'s gut bleeding vocals are an intricacy of playing so well developed that I have to believe the best is yet to come.
