REVIEW: Daemonlord - Aarstrand Ketzer Records, 2002
5/10
Daemonlord - Aarstrand - cover art In Spain, in the summer of the year 2000, Kepa created Demonlord where he would play all instruments and only have the help of a singer. The first ditto was Sixto and he stayed in the band for 4 releases (after which the band changed their name to Daemonlord because the other name was already taken) and contributed to a fifth that later was cancelled for release. Now, in late 2002, Egnar Blasphemy had joined up to be the vocalist and has stayed as it ever since. “Aarstrand” isn’t their latest outcome; it was released in 2002, but what Daemonlord seems to be all about is rough black metal with a little touch of old-school thrash. It’s rough but not especially brutal in any way. You have the nice walking riffs and the pounding drums and a crow croaking for attention. Oh, sorry, that was Egnar! I was quite doubtful towards the production at first (it’s not the most clear), but later I understood that it fits really well. The music is quite headbangable and I think that it sounds competent; not “very”, but competent. The only really weak thing is actually the vocals. They sound... bad. And when there is too much thrash involved the quality is decreases a couple of levels. This disc doesn’t quite “talk” to me, I don’t find it special enough but there is a possibility that Kepa and Egnar might see the light some day...
