REVIEW: Damage (Fra) - Burning Hatred self-released, 2005
3.5/10
Damage (Fra) - Burning Hatred - cover art Defining Kafkaesque to a tee, this debut EP only seems to get worse as time goes on. It begins with a melodic power metal instrumental, the best song on the record, no less (oy vey!), with that one and follow-up “Hate” working perfectly well in a traditional metal vein. After that point, this French quartet employs cheap, impoverished techniques ranging from Pantera thug-vocals and chug-riffs to gangstyle choruses and clumsy thrash rhythms. Sure, there’s a fine NWOBHM mid-section in “Bleeding Head,” but it’s surrounded by so much confused zeitgeist doggerel that it’s for naught. The closest kindred spirits I can think of would be Machine Head circa Through the Ashes of Empires, i.e. a band that spent so much time in the trendy wilderness that even its most authentic metal offerings were thence viewed with a reserve of cynicism. Could this band, then, have a prodigal son musical statement of Blackening-like proportions in it as well? With a paltry seven songs to its name and no new material after three long years? Pleeeeze.
