Anyone who remembers the early, raw and primitive black metal from bands like Sarcofágo, Treblinka, Tormentor and Bathory? Then Damnation is a band you should remember from now on if you do not know of them already. The band name is far from original but they do not wish to be original anyway. In fact, the band was formed way back in 1989 as a Bathory tribute band and it is not until now that they release their debut album which "contains 8 satanic metal songs, pure, grim and necro, no beauty, no keyboards, no bullshit" according to the label. The band members Richard Cabeza, Peter Stjärnvind and Björn Gramell are all experienced musicans from the Stockholm death metal scene and have played in veteran bands like Entombed, Unanimated and Merciless. "Destructo Evangelia" begins with a couple of raw and aggressive songs which lead up to the more dynamic title track which is indeed a wonderful song with excellent black vocals from Cabeza that should in time become a treasured classic of the genre. The three members have not forgotten about their cover band past either as they have included no less than two cover songs on the album, quite a lot considering that it is rather short and consists of only eight tracks altogether. First comes "Bloody Vengeance", the title track off Vulcano's album from 1986, where Cabeza's vocal talents are once again highly impressive. This is definitely one of the best black / thrash metal songs ever made. The other cover song is less surprising as it is Bathory's own "Armageddon" which closes the album very nicely. These old blokes still know what makes the light fade away and "Destructo Evangelia" should appeal to all fans of old-school black / thrash metal.
