REVIEW: Danse Macabre - Eva Hammerheart Records, 2001
7.5/10
Danse Macabre - Eva - cover art Danse Macabre is the side-project of Günther Theys and Jan Yrlund from Ancient Rites. Jan also runs the alternative club "The Cave Of Satyr" in Amsterdam and the artwork for this album looks very much like the ones he did for his club before. This doesn't mean that the artwork isn't beautiful though because it certainly is. The music of Danse Macabre is very different from that of Ancient Rites since it is a gothic metal project. It doesn't really hold the same standard as Ancient Rites do but this album is a lot more interesting than the new material from for example Moonspell. The music is soft and caressing but still metallic and melodic and the deep vocals from Günther are also very pleasing. The album also features some beautiful piano parts from Oliver Phillips (Everon) and strong female vocals from Antoinette Legel (Malochia). Gothic metal seems to be a fading genre today as it comes to quality but luckily there are some interesting exceptions like Danse Macabre. If you like orchestrated, soft metal with deep, clean vocals you should check out this album. For Ancient Rites fans there is one track that is more interesting than the others, just listen to the second track and you will probably recognize the voice right away.
