REVIEW: Dargaard - Rise And Fall Napalm Records, 2004
9/10
Dargaard - Rise And Fall - cover art Imagine the sky in the night. Stars shining bright above you and the pale moonlight bringing life into the shadows. An ancient castle appears in front of you as a witness of the past and left behind. This is where the music of Austria's Dargaard fits in the best. It is an environment filled with mysteries and tales of the long forgotten. "Rise And Fall" is the fourth album from the band, opening up a new chapter in their own history as their eternity trilogy has been closed. The duo of Tharen and Elisabeth Toriser have impressed me with their creative blend of medieval atmospheres and innovative darkwave even though their debut album suffered from a somewhat low quality production. This is definitely not the case this time as every sound can be clearly heard on this album. The opening track, which is also the title track, is a mighty powerful song which is some of the most ambitious and breathtaking music Tharen has composed for Dargaard so far. I am so glad that he left Abigor a long time ago because with that band I don't think he would ever have had the chance to create something unique and groundbreaking as he has truely done with his own projects. I have listened to this album several times by now and it is wonderful music as usual. It's very little missing to make it perfect and I can't put my finger on what it is. Dargaard fans don't have to tear their hearts out because they will not be disappointed this time either. They are one of a few brave ones who dare to create something that sticks out which is why they deserve all the praise in the world. Never surrender to the forces of conformity.
