The German band Dark Age is one of those bands whose sound is impossible to categorize. Me and others have therefore adopted the cryptic genre name dark metal which doesn't really mean anything at all but it does at least reflect the atmosphere of the music. This Hamburg based band's music seems to be highly appreciated by girls in particular, perhaps because of the looks of certain band members but the main reason is probably the very melodic and harmonic sound. The band's album "The Silent Republic" from 2002 was my very first encounter with their music and it was one of the most positive surprises of the year for me back then. I was unfortunately not able to see the band live as they visited Sweden in April this year as part of the Wacken Roadshow line-up (the other bands being Freedom Call, Primal Fear and Metalium) but I was lucky enough to see them at Wacken in the summer of 2003 where they did a great show. "The Silent Republic" is definitely the highlight in the band's catalogue and I knew before listening to this album that it would be difficult competing with such a strong release. "Dark Age" follows the same concept as "The Silent Republic" with one big difference - this time there are no tracks that really stand out. It somewhat feels as if this album was put together of the best leftover material from those recordings and it doesn't really help that Tiamat's Johan Edlund guests on two tracks. It feels a little strange to say that the best song on this album is the ballad "My Own Darkness", the most atypical Dark Age song of them all. Not bad at all but it lacks that little extra that "The Silent Republic" had.
