REVIEW: Dark Age - The Silent Republic Remedy Records, 2002
8/10
Dark Age - The Silent Republic - cover art The Hamburg, Germany, based band Dark Age have been active since 1995 but this is actually the first time I have been in contact with their music which is a real shame. Having listened to metal for many years now I must say that positive surprises don't come to me very often but this is definitely one of them. This is actually the third album from the band and it is also the last one on Remedy Records if they don't sign a new deal. If I were to guess I think Dark Age will find a new home on Nuclear Blast or at least that is what they deserve. As I just mentioned I haven't heard anything from the band before and therefore I can't tell what this sounds like compared to their previous releases. What I can tell you is that this album contains high quality metal that is hard to put into a category. It shows influences from death, black and thrash metal. They themselves refer to the music as dark metal. "The Silent Republic" is a lyrically dark and depressive album that is meant to symbolize the suffering of the youth of today or something like that. I myself find that kind of lyrical content to be very boring but I know that there are many who don't. The music however is more interesting to me and there are plenty of world class metal to enjoy here, especially the first five songs. The vocals are some of the best I have heard for some time and even the clean vocals sound good. This is definitely better than a whole lot of major label releases! Closing off the album we find a bonus track - a cover of AC/DC's classic "Hells Bells". I generally don't like AC/DC but this cover is great. If you like melodic and aggressive yet emotional metal go buy this right away.
