REVIEW: Dark At Dawn - Dark At Dawn AFM Records, 2006
7/10
Dark At Dawn - Dark At Dawn - cover art This review will be kind of an epitaph of a German band called Dark At Dawn who have been fighting in the shadows of many others for thirteen years now before finally deciding to call it quits quite recently. This self-titled album was the band's fourth and final label release and it consists of eleven mid-paced, melodic and semi-epic power metal anthems. Despite actually being caught in the atmosphere and the catchy sing along choruses I can't but laugh once in a while as I listen to the cheesy cliché lyrics. Being able to ignore the lyrics is unfortunately more difficult when it comes to clean vocals than the more extreme kinds no matter how hard I try. Dark At Dawn probably appeals to many fans of the more melodic side of heavy / power metal and despite not standing out as exceptionally unique there are several songs presented here that makes the album worth looking into and Thorsten Kohlrausch's slightly rough edged vocals do possess a certain charm although it took me a while to get used to them.
