REVIEW: Dark Deception - Path Of Damnation Self-financed, 2003
5/10
Dark Deception - Path Of Damnation - cover art The Austrian band Dark Deception was born in the summer 1998 but up till the year 2000 they were known under the more unoriginal names Obscure and Salvation. This second demo of their's was recorded at the Fast Forward Studio in Vienna in May 2003. It is difficult to give a fair judgment on a band by only hearing three songs from them but I don't have much of a choice. In this case the songs are also rather similar to each other both when it comes to the style and the quality. The music of Dark Deception is built on rather basic chugga-chugga death / black metal riffing and keyboard backing. The vocals actually remind me a lot of the mid-period Dimmu Borgir releases and so do the general arrangements of the songs. There are also a lot of references to early Cradle Of Filth if you look further into the music. Dark Deception have not found their own style yet and these three songs will unfortunately not make much of an impression on anyone who has already had his / her share of symphonic black metal. I advice these guys to add some action to their music next time and try to add a few ideas of their own instead of just copying others. Let something happen that surprises the listener and dare to step away from the predictable standard patterns.
