Dark Forest is a one-man project created by Dave Parks in 2003.
The first demo, simply called "Demo 2005", was released last summer, and it consists of four tracks, full of atmospheric & epic sounds, mixed with heavy guitars and aggressive vocals. The demo starts with "Warwinds", a very epic and atmospheric intro. The second track, "Under The Northern Fullmoon" (the best track in my opinion) is a mid-tempo song, again with some epic & war sounds and dominant keyboards. The guitar riffs and vocals are also good and adequate to the other instruments.
The third song "Eternal Forest" is quite a bit faster than "Under The Northern Fullmoon" but it is also good with several time-changes. Again we can see that the song structure is very good, considering that this is the first demo, and considering also that Dark Forest is a one-man project... The last song "Among Silent Pine" is, like the first one, a very epic instrumental track. A good ending to the demo.
The production is not great but this is excusable since this demo was recorded at Dave's home studio.
In my opinion this was one of the best demos of the year and Dark Forest shows potential to become one of the leaders of the Viking/Epic Metal genre. Pros: The atmosphere of the songs, Keyboards; Cons: Some guitar riffs.
