"Profane
Genocidal Creations" is the second album from Dark Fortress, a German band
that began its long hard road back in 1994. Now that they have been developing
their music for close to a decade they have become a mature band with a sound
of their own. Their second effort begins with a pretty nice symphonic intro
which is a little Emperor-like but slightly more pompous. These Germans are
not only musically influenced by Norwegian extreme metal but the album was
also recorded and produced at the well-known Grieghallen studio in Norway.
Dark Fortress play epic black metal with soaring Emperor sounding guitars but
there are also grinding death metal riffs now and then. If you like bands like
Dissection, Unanimated and the trashier side of Darkthrone then this album
will probably be of interest to you. To my surprise the band have included
some female vocals on the song "Passage To Extinction". The female vocalist
does have a decent voice but her way of singing does not make that much of an
impression on me. In other words, I think they might as well have left that
part out. Otherwise this album is not that bad; it is melodic, aggressive,
epic and majestic but the riffing is unfortunately somewhat generic. There is
one song that stands out in particular and that is the fourth one, "In Morte
Aeternitas", which is beautiful, melodic and atmospheric. This is what Dark
Fortress should focus more on in the future because that is what they do best
in my opinion. Something that might be worth mentioning is that the painting
on the front cover was done by Kris Verwimp and the layout and design by Peter
Kubik of the Austrian black metal band
Abigor.
