REVIEW: Dark Funeral - Diabolis Interium No Fashion Records, 2001
8.5/10
Dark Funeral - Diabolis Interium - cover art A lot of things have happened since 1994 when Dark Funeral recorded their first self-financed MCD at Dan Swanö's Unisound Studio. Together with Marduk they have become the leaders of Swedish black metal with a unique sound, more intense than you could ever imagine a Swedish band. Seven years, a number of lineup changes and several prominent tours later they are back with a new satanic masterpiece. Lord Ahriman and his friends are playing as fast and tight as usual but this time we can also hear a new side of Dark Funeral. The tracks on "Diabolis Interium" are much more dynamic and varied than before but the speed and intensity has luckily not been sacrificed. The sado-masochism tribute "Goddess Of Sodomy" might be called a black metal ballad but this is the only slower (yet still heavy) track on the album. Many of you have probably already heard "An Apprentice Of Satan" from their latest EP but apart from that one all the other songs are new to the world. The album might be a little bit too short but one can not have everything, right? Dark Funeral is a band that grows bigger and better with each new release which is not that common these days. Swedish black metal has never been better. Just listen to the intensity of the opening track and you will know why Dark Funeral are the ineffable kings of darkness. Even though this is a great album the music of Dark Funeral is even more intense when experienced live.
