REVIEW: Dark Legion - Bloodshed Deadsun Records, 2001
7.5/10
Dark Legion - Bloodshed - cover art ¾ of an hour worth of fairly chaotic death metal by way of Poland. Although similar to fellow Poles Yattering, Dark Legion also appear to be heavily influenced by US death metal. Drummer Jack Denka has got not only a speedy blastbeat, but an ear for rhythmic innovation, as witnessed in the odd accents of "Sins Of The Past" and the syncopation of "The Dark Light". With a nice poppy sound, bassist Martin Kalinka rips out some scales in "Vein" and gives Dark Legion a pro-sounding resonance to their rather erratic style. As much as I appreciate bands who incorporate non-metal influences into their music, the jazz section in "Haemorrhage" was pretty contrived, poorly played and wholly unnecessary, as Dark Legion already have an original sound. Maybe other bands who have a more comical sound can get away with this, but it really sticks out in a bad way to me on such a seething death metal album The lyrics are written in bad English, and yet again, while showing a desire to spread their art, the band should have worked on their linguistic skills before setting the lyrics down to a final draft. Without these 2 small personal qualms, this would have easily ranked at 8 in my books, and is a really enjoyable album. FAVORITE TRACKS: "Razor", "The Dark Light", "Show No Mercy".
