REVIEW: Dark Moor - Between Light And Darkness Arise Records, 2003
7/10
Dark Moor - Between Light And Darkness - cover art I must say that Dark Moor have done a bold move with their brand new album "Between Light And Darkness". Those of you who know this band from before are probably quite fond of their melodic neo-classical power metal riffing and powerful choruses but this is something you will have to do without on this album. Instead the band have decided to make this an all acoustic and orchestral album which really doesn't have that much to do with metal at all but is more of classical music. It opens up with the beautiful acoustic lullaby "Memories" with Elisa's charming Spanish accent, an accent that unfortunately grows a little annoying in a few songs. I am actually a fan of this Madrid based band since before and I really enjoy classical music when it is done well but unfortunately Dark Moor have failed slightly for the first time in their career. While the music itself isn't that bad at all the vocals from Elisa doesn't go very well with it and like many other power metal bands Dark Moor doesn't quite show themselves at their best when they do calm songs. This album isn't all about acoustic guitars and classical orchestration though and towards the end there are a couple of metal songs as well, including "Mistery Of Goddess" where you can at least get a feeling of the real Dark Moor. There are plenty of guest musicians featured here, among them musicians playing harp, violins, piano and cello. The vocalists from fellow Madrid inhabitants and label mates Arwen also contribute with their voices. It is far from being a bad album but we all know that Dark Moor can do better than this. It will nonetheless be interesting to see if Dark Moor can go on as before now that the majority of the band members have left the band, including the female vocalist Elisa. Fans of orchestral music į la Rhapsody who don't mind a smoother less metallic sound should be able to enjoy this album. Stand-out tracks: "Memories", "Mistery Of Goddess", "Dies Irae".
