REVIEW: Dark Moor - Dark Moor Arise Records, 2003
7/10
Dark Moor - Dark Moor - cover art After the acoustic experimental album "Between Light And Darkness" Spain's own power metal kings Dark Moor are back again with a new real studio album. Since three of the members left the band early this year in order to start a new band on their own this album features a brand new line-up. This kind of turbulence within a band can't be easy to deal with but it doesn't seem to have had any major effects on the productivity of Dark Moor. Musically not much has changed either, they still perform the same bombastic and symphonic power metal as before although the vocals are different now as their female vocalist Elisa was one of those who left earlier this year. Their new vocalist Alfred Romero is doing a fine job though so no need to worry about the development in this department. In order not to make the transition for old fans too hard this album also features female guest vocals from a girl called Beatriz Albert. Dark Moor doesn't reach the peak they had with "The Gates Of Oblivion" last year but it is still a good album. I particularly enjoy "Wind Like Stroke" where their use of powerful choir vocals remind me a little of the French band Nightmare who they will soon be out on tour with. When I told you that there had not been much of a progression in the music I may have misled you a little. They are still firmly rooted in their old Rhapsody style power metal sound but their new album has more of a metal opera character to it. Fans of Avantasia may very well enjoy this one. For the final track "The Dark Moor" the band promised something extra and, well, they were right because that song contains some of the most foolish sounding vocals I've heard in a long time. Other than that Dark Moor have yet again completed a good solid album, let's just hope that they will find their way to old standard the next time because when listening to this album it feels from time to time that they are heading towards something great but then, for some reason, never reach there. Stand-out tracks: "Wind Like Stroke".
