REVIEW: Dark Sanctuary - Royaume Mélancolique Ancestral Craft, 1999
7.5/10
Dark Sanctuary - Royaume Mélancolique - cover art This was the second release from Dark Sanctuary on their native French label Ancestral Craft before joining the legions on Avantgarde's sublabel Wounded Love. The band was originally formed as a solo project in early 1996 by Arkdae but soon it evolved into a "real" band, including the incorporation of a violin player in 1998. On "Royaume Mélancolique" they bring us more than an hour of sad symphonies on a journey through the darkest and most melancholic realms of this world. Together with bands like Dargaard and Avrigus I think Dark Sanctuary is among the leading acts in the world when it comes to creating dark atmospheric music. This is not a metal album as I'm sure you have come to understand by now. Instead it features beautiful female soprano vocals (very strong indeed), keyboard orchestration, piano and accoustic guitars. If you want to travel through the darkest recesses and crevices of the human soul this album is the perfect companion.
