The last album from Dark Tranquillity was no
doubt one of the metal highlights of 2000 and I have been looking forward to
hearing a new album from the band ever since then. "Damage Done" is the
sixth full-length release from these pioneers of Swedish melodic death metal
and continues pretty much where "Haven" left off. This doesn't mean that
this is a copy of their previous release though because they have now taken
their sound to the next level. If it was possible to reach beyond perfection
this is almost what Dark Tranquillity have achieved this time. The songs are
even more complex and tighter than before, the riffs are placed with greatest
care, the growling is seemingly flawless and the melodies are possessing a
wonderful mix of beauty and passion that I don't think can be found in the
music of any other death metal band in the world. In Flames have generally
been announced as the kings of Swedish melodeath but today Dark Tranquillity
are displaying a solid and firm sound which I find even more impressive. I am
very happy that the band didn't just copy the sound from their previous
release, except for the song "Monochromatic Stains" which is a rip-off from
themselves, and this album should not disappoint any fans of the band. This is
so far probably the best album release of 2002 in close competition with the
double album from Dream Theater and there are no limits for what this band is
capable of in the future. Stand-out tracks: "Final Resistance", "Damage
Done", "White Noise / Black Silence" but every single track is close to a
masterpiece.
