REVIEW: Dark Tranquillity - Haven Century Media, 2000
9.5/10
Dark Tranquillity - Haven - cover art Dark Tranquillity has become the leading melodic death metal band from Sweden together with In Flames and with this album they show that they are still in their prime. No matter what you have heard about this album this is the band's most mature effort so far and with the help of the wizard of electronics Martin Brändström Dark Tranquillity is one of the most daring bands out there today. Within the thick guitar layers and the once again growling Mikael Stanne the music is embroidered with ever as beautiful melodies built on both guitars, piano and keyboards. Many fans of the band were a bit disappointed with their last album "Projector" because of the many slower tunes with Stanne trying on clean vocals. On the contrary I think that was a good yet experimental album with all the usual Dark Tranquillity trademarks. "Haven" is first of all more varied and the growling is back as I've already mentioned - (almost) no clean vocals on this one. The tempo is perhaps a little faster than last time but the main difference is that the sound is thicker and more complex which makes this album only getting better with each listen. With beautiful tracks such as "Indifferent Sun", "Ego Drama" and "Haven" Dark Tranquillity secures their spot in the hall of fame of metal.
