"The Mind's I" means a lot
of things in the career of Dark Tranquillity. It is their final album for the
French label Osmose Productions before entering more of a mainstream label
(Century Media) and it is also the final release featuring their original bass
player Fredrik Johansson. These twelve songs were composed at a time when the
Swedish melodic death metal scene had reached its peak; At The Gates were gone
and In Flames were about to adopt a more accessible and modern sound if you
will. Without a doubt this album is one of the finest releases ever from the
Osmose label. Dark Tranquillity are at their best when they take us through a
musical landscape that is both violent and harsh yet also beautiful and
serene. This is Gothenburg metal the way it was meant to be - ultramelodic and
atmospheric with great growling vocals and it also shows the incredible
talents of the band members. The bass player Fredrik Johansson not only
handles his four strings but also does some drumming and guitar duty. Their
old member Anders Fridén (later with In Flames) returns for this album where
he is doing some guest vocals. There are two tracks in particular that
deserves to mentioned here - "Insanity's Crescendo" with its nice acoustic
intro and female vocals from Sara Svensson who has a very good voice although
she uses it a little strange and "Still Moving Sinews" which is one of the
most impressive songs Dark Tranquillity have ever composed. This is an album
to get sentimental about because it represents the golden age in the history
of Swedish melodic death metal. Beautiful
art!
